Cognitive Remediation

While most psychotherapeutic approaches to psychosis focus the ‘positive symptoms’ (such as delusions and hallucinations), a large body of research indicates that impairments in areas of cognition such as memory, executive functioning and attention are actually better predictors of functioning.

Cognitive Remediation (CR) is the best validated intervention that aims to improve cognition and daily life functioning in people struggling with psychosis and other severe mental illnesses. Our lab is part of a large implementation initiative bring CR to sites across BC, in collaboration with the BC Ministry of Health, Vancouver Coastal Health and the Regional Health Authorities.

On this page, you can also find links to the sites and mental health teams offering CR.

Metacognitive Training for Psychosis

MCT is a well validated group based intervention that helps clients understand the cognitive biases which have been shown to be associated with delusions and paranoia. Access to materials and training for clinicians is available through the University of Hamburg and Prof. Steffen Moritz.

Their team has also developed a self-help app (Cogito) which can be downloaded through the App store or Google Play store.

The North American CBT for psychosis (CBTp) Network

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is considered the gold-standard psychotherapy for individuals with psychosis.

For clinicians who are interested in training resources or joining a community of other clinicians and researchers, consider becoming a part of the NACBTp Network. The Network also has a membership directory which will shortly be available, where you can look for a therapist who does CBTp.

There are also a number of treatment manuals available to clinicians, including Treating Psychosis by Dr. Nicola Wright and colleagues. You can find it on Amazon, or better yet, through your local independent bookstore. They have also set up a website which is a treasure trove of resources including videos, reading lists, and training videos.
